Line: The most basic element. It can created both two-dimensional and 3-dimensional depending on how it is represented.
Value: The extreme difference between two colors, including black and white.
Shape: Caused when lines are put together to give something a form. Can range from organic to geometric (usually has edges).
Form: Something that has length, width, and depth. Many thing that we create in ceramics class have form.
Space: The area around and between things. Space can be increased or decreased depending on the angle something is viewed from.
Color: Brings out shapes and forms. Commonly used when describing something glazed with multiple colors.
Texture: Can range from soft, fuzzy, rough, etc. Someone can create texture by cutting, scraping, carving, etc. Mainly described as how something feels to the touch.
DESIGN ELEMENTS
Balance: When different aspects of something are combined equally.
Contrast: When things that don't seem to go together are put together in order to grab the viewer's attention.
Movement: When different aspects are organized in order to give an illusion of movement (also known as making the viewer's eyes follow a pattern.
Emphasis: When a certain aspect of something is made to be the center of attention. This could include shapes to point towards a certain thing.
Pattern: The repeating of certain aspects in order to create a design.
Rhythm: The repetition of a pattern to make the viewer assume the pattern continues on.
Proportion & Scale: When sizes of certain aspects are combined in order to give a pleasing feel. By doing this, it can change a viewer's perception of something.
Unity & Harmony: Created when certain aspects are put into a sensible composition together. This is the exact opposite of contrast.
